Garden Sage or (Dalmatian) Sage, and Common Sage, Salvia officinalis L. distilled, produces a clear to pale yellow, mobile liquid that smells camphoraceous and medicinal. The oil is rich in camphor, thujones, borneol and cineole. EOQA offers an American distillation of this herb. It grows very well in the US.  Usually in Aromatherapy European oil is favored but there is no data to support this preference. The ancient Europeans considered the herb sacred. It is not surprising then, that it would become a common aromatherapy EO. The oil is considered antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, digestive, diuretic, febrifuge, insecticide, laxative, stomachic and tonic.  It is advised that it be diluted before topical use. As with all ketone rich oils there are some precautions that expectant mothers should observe. That said, experienced aroma therapists will use it for muscle massage if it is diluted sufficiently. There are other aroma therapists that absolutely will not use it with expectant mothers. The general rule is use common sense and moderation. Most modern EO experts use sage but it is not listed in Robert Tisserand’s earlier work, The Art of Aromatherapy.

As a garden herb it performs well. Hydrosols from this herb make functional spritzers for hot flashes.
